The Samburu Reserve's Iconic Giraffes

The Samburu National Reserve is renowned for its population of reticulated giraffes, a subspecies distinguished by their beautiful coat patterns. With a population of around 33,000 individuals, these gentle giants are often seen in herds of up to 30 animals, grazing in the acacia woodlands and along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Located north of Laikipia, Samburu National Reserve offers a unique safari experience in Kenya's arid north. The reserve's landscape is characterized by the Ewaso Nyiro River, which cuts through the semi-desert terrain, creating a rich ecosystem that supports a wide variety of wildlife.

Together with Buffalo Springs National Reserve and Shaba National Reserve, Samburu forms a protected area that is home to the "Samburu Special Five" - Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and beisa oryx. These species are not found in southern Kenya's parks.

The reserve's landscape is dominated by the Ewaso Nyiro River, which flows through a series of north-south loops, creating diverse habitats. The river is flanked by thick acacia and doum palm forests, while the surrounding area features open bush country and rocky ridges.
